Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Anything that is fire-rated is open game. The finishes for custom cabs range from standard to high-end materials that are custom fabricated for each project.
A basic cab can cost around $10,000, while a high-end custom cab can cost closer to $50,000. There are far too many variables involved to provide a more accurate estimate without understanding your needs. The type and amount of materials used are a huge factor in the final price.
The custom cab process involves a number of steps, including consultation, design, pricing, surveying, engineering and submittals, fabrication and delivery—all before we arrive on-site for the installation.
It’s always a good idea to let your elevator company know what you’re planning. We can facilitate this discussion and provide estimated weights so no one is surprised by counterbalancing expenses.
There is minimal noise involved with a cab renovation, allowing the work to be completed during regular working hours.
The actual installation process (not including design and fabrication) typically takes three to four standard working days.
Elevator interior design companies must know their codes, have a current TDLR license and be able to provide code-compliant designs that consider weight, materials, and emergency access.
Texas requires a license from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) to work in and on elevators. TDLR licenses, which must be renewed annually, allow contractors to file required permits and submit closeout documents completed by licensed third parties verifying the work was performed to code.
You don’t have to be union to work on or in elevators, but you do have to have a license. Non-union maintenance companies and non-union cab interior companies are more common now than in the past.
It is extremely rare for one company to design, fabricate, install and maintain custom cab interiors. An elevator maintenance company may subcontract the design, fabrication, and installation work as part of a package for a renovation, or it may be included with the equipment in the case of new construction. Cab interior work usually is project based and includes the design, fabrication, and installation, be it a total renovation or individual parts like the flooring or handrails.
